International property mogul Donald J. Trump will be “taking immediate legal action" against local real estate developer Megaworld Corp. for using his name to promote a project in Makati City.
“This is an outrageous attempt to misled buyers into thinking that my name and company is affiliated with Megaworld’s project, which is absolutely untrue. We will take every course of action available to us at law to stop Megaworld from perpetration this fraud on the public," Trump said in a statement emailed by his organization to GMANews.TV
According to the statement, Megaworld used a billboard with the name “Trumps" in front of a development site located in prominent letters in front of a development site at the corner of dela Costa St., Geronimo St., and Sen. Gil Puyat Ave in Makati City.
“It is clear that the word ‘Trump’ is unmistakably associated with me and with my company throughout the world. When someone says the word ‘Trump’ people certainly do not think of Megaworld.
Reached for comment, Megaworld refrained from issuing a detailed statement, saying a pending case with the Philippines's Intellectual Property Office prevents them from doing so.
"Please bear with us if we refrain from issuing any detailed comment on Mr. Donald J. Trump’s statement against Megaworld as we have a pending case in the Intellectual Property Office," Megaworld said in a statement sent to the media.
"This much we can say: We don't need to ride on the name of Mr Donald Trump as we are a leading property developer in the Philippines while Mr Trump has no known real estate project in the country," the firm added.
Trump owns Trump Organization, the largest private company in New York. The firm develops residential, hotel and golf property around the world.
In the statement, Trump Org explained that there it has a pending case protesting Megaworld’s attempt to trademark the name “Trumps" in the Philippines. The protest has been in existence since June 2007.
